[52]***The Ghosts 'n Goblins series is known for its harsh difficulty level and sadly the NES version is no exception. On top of that you have to play through the game twice to see the real ending. However, if you are up for a real challenge (or have a good method to cheat at hand), the game might become enjoyable, because it features great graphics and music for an early NES game and is an all in all very faithful arcade conversion regarding the limited capabilities of the Famicom/NES.***Ghosts'n Goblins was a popular arcade game before it made the leap to the NES in 1986. Like later games in the series, Ghosts'n Goblins presents quite a challenge to players brave enough to take on the role of Arthur and delve into the realm of demons and monsters to rescue the kidnapped princess. Choose your weapons wisely and take advantage of their strengths to deal with the situation at hand. Pass through the six gates that stand between you and Astaroth, and teach him a lesson in chivalry he'll never forget. Demonstrating a high level of technical prowess for a game of its era, Ghosts'n Goblins presents a unique and unforgettable universe. The stage for adventure is set. Are you up to the test?

Aigīna no Yogen: Balubalouk no Densetsu Yori  Vic Tokai1986Aigiina no Yogen is a strange platform game. Between the different levels/dungeons you walk around on an overworld. Once in a dungeon the perspective changes to side-view and you have to kill a certain amount of enemies until a ladder appears to the next room and so on. Monsters are killed by activating stationary weapons which appear when you jump against blocks with your head. The game is really frustrating. The controls are a big issue. You can make normal and high jumps. But high jumps fail so often because of the unresponsive controls it ruins everything. And if the game wouldn't be hard enough because of that, the developers had you find five star fragments throughout the dungeons, which are in very secretly hidden rooms. And why they made the overworld so frustrating as well I don't know. Here you also have to walk on exact spots to trigger events like earthquakes which open up the way again. labelimageminimize
Mappy-Land  Taxan;Namco (Tose)1986
[70]***I have not seen a package with the UPC 6-30539-04549-6 on it. But plenty of people are selling the title using this UPC. UPC 0-40886-62779-3 is visually verified as being on the packages I've seen.***Mappy-Land is a Famicom only sequel of Namco's arcade hit [game=#121]Mappy[/game]. Namco left the main elements in place, namely platforms that can be reached via trampolines and you having to collect certain things in each level while being followed by nasty cats. The game is colorful and cartoony looking. The levels are very varied and sometimes contain sub-levels where you have to collect an extra item which helps you to leave the main level. Controls are also OK. The first levels are easy enough, but in later levels when the cats are actually running faster than you the game becomes much more difficult. A good sequel to a cute arcade classic.

Castlequest  ASCII;Nexoft (ASCII;Bits Laboratory)1986A long time ago in a faraway land, there lived a lovely young princess named Margarita. Her beauty and grace were known throughout the land - especially to Mad Mizer, the Dark Lord of the grim Groken Castle high in the Forbidden Mountains. He had vowed to make the Princess his queen; and so, one terrible day, he sent his ghoulish helpers to capture her, and she was carried off and imprisoned in one of the hundred miserable rooms of Groken Castle. News of the kidnapping spread throughout the kingdom, and many courageous young men braved the perils of Groken Castle in an attempt to rescue the Princess - only to become hopelessly lost in the complicated maze of rooms, ensnared in one of the many treacherous traps, or foiled by Mad Mizer's deadly servants. Finally the news reached the worthy Prince Rafael, who had long loved the Princess from afar. Raising his sword to the heavens, Prince Rafael swore that nothing would keep him from her side, and set out on his Castlequest. The odds against him seemed hopeless... But legend has it that two magical fairies have been held captive in the Castle for centuries. If the Prince can find and release them to gain their help, he may yet succeed in his quest. And to rescue his fair Princess, he is prepared to face the deadly wrath of the Dark Lord himself!***This is a different game from [game=#i196277]Castle Quest[/game]***In this platform/puzzle mix you control a brave knight trying to rescue a princess which is trapped inside a huge castle. The way to the princess however is blocked by doors. Many doors. So your main objective is to collect keys with the appropriate colors to make progress. Although you start with 50 lives (at least in the US version) the game is not easy. Pixel-perfect jumping is needed and there is the constant threat that you run out of keys and trap yourself. This is also my main complaint about this game, cause it tends to become confusing and frustrating. And your only attack (with a knife) has a much too short range. As with many early ASCII Famicom/NES games this game originated on MSX homecomputers. The rooms of the castle are bigger though in the NES version (the MSX games featured only one-screen rooms). Graphics and sound get their job done but are far from being great. labelimagesubject
Hana no Star Kaidou  Victor1987Rarely I refuse to finish a game when I have cheats and save states at hand, but "Hana no Star Kaidou" manages that easily. The game is virtually unplayable. You are controlling two musicians through several semi-linear levels with rather ugly graphics. The point is you are controlling both of them at the same time and that this element doesn't work well at all. I haven't played all NES games (yet), but this is a sure candidate for a member in the worst 25 list of Famicom/NES games ever. labelimageminimize
The Goonies II  Konami1987Packin' a heap of ugliness, mean old Ma Fratelli's come back for revenge. And this time she plans to do away with "The Goonies" for good! One by one this crazed mama and her two nutty sons have kidnapped your fellow Goonies, hauling them off to a spooky shack and hiding them in a maze of adventure filled with danger, including the slippery ice cavern, secret underground sea, and eerie attic. Now you're the only Goonie left. The fate of your friends is in your hands. But saving the day won't be easy. Armed with your trusty yo-yo and whatever weapons you can find, you'll be forced to fight off fearsome foes, and solve menacing mysteries. You'll have to be willing to risk it all, being brave and bold, to rescue your buddies, "THE GOONIES!"***
[49]***
[33]***
[83]***
[49]***
[52]***As in the first Goonies game your task is to rescue your friends from the evil Fratelli gang. Goonies II features a bigger scenario and slightly better graphics than its predecessor. And besides the typical platforming scenes it has first-person adventure scenes when entering one of the many doors. But it's exactly the adventure part that I didn't like very much. Most of the time you are hitting the walls and ceilings with your fist or a hammer, hopefully finding secret items or passages. The adventure scenes are also not as good looking. The whole layout of the house and the several cave systems is much more complicated than in the first Goonies game, which was simpler, but worked better in my opinion.

Lost Word of JeNnY: Ushinawareta Message  Takara (Tose)1987"Lost Word of Jenny" is based on the "Jenny" dolls toyline, a kind of Japanese "Barbie". In six levels you are collecting parts of a passcode to finish the game. Compared to Takara's first Famicom game [game=#155967]Transformers: Convoy no Nazo[/game] , "Lost Word of Jenny" is an improvement, but not by much. The levels look different from each other and are connected by a city overworld scenario but have a very repetitive layout. The jumping controls are bad and its nearly impossible to land precise attacks. labelimageminimize
Tokoro-San no Mamorumo Semerumo  Sony (ISCO)1987This platform game features the Japanese actor George Tokoro as main protagonist. The creatures in this game are really bizarre. I mean, where else do you see a flying whale with a rocket attached to its back? There are two major negative points in this game. First of all your ammo for the water pistol is limited. But extra ammo is hidden and can only be found by randomly shooting around, thus it feels you are spending too much ammo for finding a bit more. And the second one is the non-linear level structure in the first part of the game. After beating the boss of a level there are several doors, which lead to other levels. However this is quite random. It might actually happen that you move away from your goal into earlier levels again. Combine this with unspectacular gameplay and with graphics and music that even struggle to be average, you get a rather weak game as result. However its not completely unplayable and still a step or two above abysmal games like [game=#181533]Hana no Star Kaidou[/game]. labelimageminimize
Kid Icarus  Nintendo1987
[100]***
[22]***
[52]***
[49]***Half a year after Nintendo released Kid Icarus in Japan for the Famicom Disk System, they brought the game to the west for the NES. The game is of course nearly the same as the Famicom Disk Version with a few differences. Instead of saving your game on disk a password system was implemented. The NES version als features weaker sound effects and the last shooting-type level a bit more convenient control-wise. The rest from the Famicom Disk System version also applies to the NES version. It is a quality-wise good game, a mixture of [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game], [game=#7949]Zelda 2[/game] and [game=#8012]Metroid[/game] with nice graphics and music but overly high difficulty level.***In a time when men and gods lived in harmony, the kingdom of Angel Land was ruled by two goddesses: Palutena, the Goddess of Light, and Medusa, the Goddess of Darkness. Unlike Palutena, Medusa despised all humans and enjoyed destroying their crops and turning them into stone. One day, Palutena decided to punish the evil Medusa and banished her after turning her into a hideous monster. But Medusa would not go without a fight. She created an army of monsters and evil spirits and captured Palutena. Players play as Pit, a young angel trapped in the Underworld, and Palutena's only hope. They use a magical bow to retrieve the Sacred Treasures, defeat Medusa and restore peace to Angel Land.***This game was released alongside Metroid. They share similar graphics and even have a crossover character. Both games were also the first to use a password feature. The game was made in 1986 by Nintendo.

Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.***[media=youtube]5VuU2rvPmGI[/media] labelimageminimize
Miracle Ropit's Adventure in 2100  King Records (Micronics)1987Despite being a Japanese market exclusive, all of the in-game text is in English.***"Miracle Ropit" is a really bad platform game. The developers tried to bring variety into the game, with quite different locations, some "puzzles" and levels that run vertically. However the final product feels very very buggy, badly animated and difficult. And particularly bad design decisions like the barriers at the end of the first stage, which can only be opened by firing and continuously hop from a certain stone to another stone. First I thought the game must be based on some manga or anime but I couldn't find evidence that this is really the case. labelimageminimize
Majou Densetsu II: Daimashikyou Galious  Konami1987"Majou Densetsu II" is the NES port of the second game in the Knightmare series which was quite popular on Japanese homecomputers and the only one which was ported to the Nintendo console. The story is the same as ever. You, entering a monster-infested castle, trying to save the kingdom by defeating the evil Galious. The special thing is that you can switch between two characters (a male and female one) at any time. Each of them has some special abilities which makes switching between them necessary at certain points. Killing monsters will eventually increase you life bar, you can collect coins to buy and upgrade weapons and items, which gives the game an Action-RPG touch. The typical Konami quality is all there with good controls and audiovisuals (although not quite as good as in some earlier games). However I must say that I was a bit disappointed because at this time in the lifetime of the NES, Konami was the one company that didn't rely on overly complicated, nearly unfair level layouts and tons of not non-apparent secrets. But sadly "Majou Densetsu II" features all that. Without a map or very strong nerves you won't stand much of a chance. labelimageminimize
Spelunker II: Yuushahe no Chousen  Irem (Now Production)1987For the sequel to Spelunker the developers changed quite a lot of gameplay elements. You can choose between one of three different characters (explorer, priest and esper) each with its own life and "holy" stat bonuses and different attacks/weapons. The way is often blocked by doors which need the appropriate key and there are also very few adventure/puzzle elements with hints hiding in bonus items. You explore a forest and underground caves in search for three orbs guarded by evil bosses to ultimately rescue a fairy kingdom. Well, Spelunker II is a bit better than its predecessor, but still the controls aren't the best. The most annoying thing about this game is the knockback effect you get from touching enemies which feels like pushing you back a quarter of the screen. That makes the knockback in games like Castlevania feel very tame in comparison. The levels have a rather complicated layout with exits not only to the left and right but also up and down and often strangely connected paths. But that seems to be typical for a Famicom/NES game of that time, probably hoping to sell more hint books in Japan *ahem*.***[media=youtube]vwzgPSKD5xA[/media] labelimageminimize

This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet. These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or center, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth. In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... And now, they have been seized by the Great King's eight Dukes, in a desperate bid to gain control of the world for themselves. Mystery Quest Taxan (Carry Lab)1989"Mystery Quest" is the NES version of the Japanese [game=#183234]Hao Kun no Fushigi na Tabi[/game] for the Famicom Disk System. I don't like this platform game very much. The controls are ok, but the graphics and music are not really good and the game is rather monotonous. You have to retrieve several objects from four castles. The castles itself are maze-like platform levels with doors, mini-bosses which drop keys, breakable blocks etc. Between the castles are linear outdoor levels. The game has only a couple of standard enemies which repeat and repeat (except the mini-bosses, which at least change in each castle). The cartridge version has become a bit easier and they changed the music a little. However, considering this game was released about two years after the original Japanese FDS version it is absolutely not understandable why they left out the fifth and sixth castle as well as the last outdoor zone (cutting the game for about 1/3). That helps to make a disappointing game even worse. labelimageminimize

It doesn't do anything, it is just recorded in the unused space in the ROM. Accidentally included to be sure. The source code reveals that a PDS development system was used (software and peripheral for x86 MS-DOS). Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa  Konami1993About five years after the original Famicom Disk System version Konami released a cartridge version for the Famicom, and again only in Japan. While the game retains its good playability and charme due to the unusual baby protagonist and varied stages there was already lots more competition and better platform games on the market in 1993. But nonetheless still a nice platform game.***BIO MIRACLE BOKUTTE UPA is an action game released in 1988, but it was never available outside of Japan. Players take on the role of baby Upa, a prince of the Akuyo kingdom. Prince Upa must take on an adventure spanning seven different worlds in order to rescue the kingdom from the dangerous demon Zai. Upa must defeat the enemies he meets along the way by inflating them. Upa can then use these floating enemies to his advantage by bouncing off of or riding on top of them. The prince must also avoid deadly thorns and pits while keeping an eye out for helpful items such as milk (to restore health) and bells (for temporary invincibility) if he hopes to succeed. If you're looking for a cute and solid platformer with a hero unlike those in most other games, then look no further than BIO MIRACLE BOKUTTE UPA. labelimagesubject
